  1. Welcome

The people of Lesvos and migration have been a synonymous phenomenon throughout the ages. Whether it was the struggle against difficult natural elements, population growth or diminishing opportunities, the people of Lesvos used their sea-faring spirit to travel to the other side of that mysterious sea. Others settled far away; others returned to their homeland. Others visit from time to time; others were never seen again.

Syndesmos.net is an visual migration website designed to connect the people of Lesvos, no matter which corner of the globe they are found. Establishing this Website provides Mytileneans with the unique opportunity to search for relatives, friends or villagers from their Island.

Thank you for visiting our website.

    Dear Friends,

The migrant profiles are definitely coming along….they are just so many! Just click onto the Agiassos page of migrant profiles, and you will understand what I am talking about. Why there is an imbalance in the numbers (i.e. profiles) among the different villages is what I call “the current of introductions”. That is, I visit the Lesvian home of someone to whom I have been introduced too. In some cases, such as Agiassos or Paleohori (and coming soon, Agia Paraskevi), the current of introductions has been so strong that it just kept going- people just continued to introduce me to other “horiani”. In the long term, the numbers should balance out. I have just passed the 400 mark and there are at least 200 to go, before I catch up.

We are looking at Mytilenian migration on a global level; we would love to hear from Mytilenians from all over the world! More and more visitors from United States of America, Canada, Greece, New Zealand, South Africa, Great Britain, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Sweden are using Syndesmos; feel free and e-mail migrant profiles, photographs and lifestories to Vasilios Vasilas at vvasilas@yahoo.com.au and we will gladly upload them.

November was a busy month for our website. There were several spikes- that is, records broken- in statistical areas such visits, visitors and bandwith used. There was also a strong showing in hits. Pages viewed are a far cry from heady days of September when 26,000 pages were viewed, which shows although more people are using the site, their focus is more specific, rather than scouring the entire site.

Putting syndesmos in the google search engine puts our website to the top of the list. It shows we are slowly growing…

Forums section is taking awfully long to take off. A little patience needed here. Friends assure me it will take time and may take off suddenly. Fingers crossed. Visitors are happy to view but not reply. For example, over 250 have viewed the request for any Mytilenian summer experiences and there were no replies.

With the festive season rapidly approaching, Merry Christmas and may 2010 be a year of GOOD HEALTH, JOY, PEACE and PROSPERITY.

Thank you all very much. Thank you for making November such a successful month!

    Vasilis
